Sorry for the inconvenience, No it’s not a common problem but we would like to clarify
What is the version of OS (Operating system) you use?
Did you made any recent changes to the computer?
But did you tried to update the windows defender.
Check all the Windows services are enabled under System configuration utility.
Make sure Windows services are enabled under Microsoft services (start-run-services.msc)
1. Is this a common problem?
---not really.. but, you have XP or VISTA for that pc?
3. If I restore my machine to a point prior to downloading McAfee to rectify that fault will I lose three years worth of protection?
---no. you will still have your three years worth of protection. but before you can re-download mcafee, you first need to run the mcafee removal tool. (CLICK HERE for instructions)
4. If I continue as frustrated as I am can I get my money back?

I am sorry for the dealy - but I have had difficulty getting back into the forums.
The computer is running on Windows Vista version 6.
I have made no changes to the compuyer - other than downoad McAfee.
I have no idea how to do the other things that you suggest.
The problems persists.
