    EEPC Data Loss Rate

      Many new customers are curious about the likelyhood of data loss in their deployments. From the vendor's perspective, this is very difficult for us to track. Not all customers want to share their data, and that data could be in the wrong format (i.e. they count a pw reset call as equal to a hard disk failure).

      If you have deployed the EEPC (formely SafeBoot DE), then you probably wanted to know this at the start of your deployment. So do the community a favor and share you data here!

      Recovery success rate: 100 machines got "hands on support" from our support team, and they fixed or recovered data from 99 of them.

          Did you backup data prior to encryption: Yes, using on going backup agent solution
          Did you check disk health prior to encryption: No
          Recovery success rate: 100%. I can't see using drive encryption with out a backup solution.

            Did you check disk health prior to encryption: No
            Recovery success rate: We had 15 PCs that had issues where technicians had to recover data and replace the drive. 2 were total failures couldn't recover any data.

              15 - 25% of the computer we encrpryt fail.  Wherein failure is defined as client unable to use the device do to an error in the encryption software.  Mostly do to password and account sycronization problems.

               

              of the 15-25%  - 45% require the machine to be flattened and re-encrypted because no one can access the computer.  This is mostly because it is faster to redeploy than to try and fix sycronization timeout issues.

               

              This is what we are seeing with our laptops and we have about 500.

               

              It has gotten a little better since the latest patches for the product.

                Did you backup data prior to encryption: No
                Did you check disk health prior to encryption: Yes with smartctl. Fixed with chkdsk when indicated or drive replacement.

                 

                Initial deployment issues (not chkdsked, quick-formatted machines) - ~13% non-bootable after/during install. (~1,000 clients)

                Second deployment (HD testing, chkdsk when needed) - <1% non-bootable. (~19,000 clients)

                 

                Ongoing:

                Unrecoverable data: ~6 over the last 12 months. (~23,000 clients)

                Hardware: IBM/Lenovo: T42,T60,T61,T500, HP: 8530, Itronix: VR2

                 

                Hardware compatibility issues with various flavors of DE and EEPC, in combination with Options:

                Lenovo T500/T400, Itronix VR2.

                  Recovery success rate: 49 machines got "hands on support" from our support team, and they fixed or recovered data from 48 of them.

                  Our pilot testing showed a 4% failure rate, which proved accurate through production implementation

                  The older the laptop the more likely it was to fail

                  Deployed version was EEPC 5.1.9

                    Are you familiar with our "one time boot" procedure? This allows you to get access to a computer that doesn't have any accounts assigned to it. You simply do a challenge/response like you would when you reset a password. But instead of choosing "reset password" you choose the one time boot option. This gets you into Windows. From there you can sync with the server, where you would have fixed your user provisioning problem.

                      I believe so.  The one wherein we call support for the password of the day.  Then we can get to the desktop.  The problem we have is if we can get the server support team to get the password we normally get errors in sync with database.  When this error occures the server teams has informed us support says to flatten and restart.  The time it takes to complete all the steps needed to discover we have to flatten is the same it takes us to reimage and get encryption restarted.

                       

                      If this is the wrong "one time boot" thing please let me know, we would kill to not have to reimage and re-encrypt.

                        You may not even need to call suport to get the code of the day. This is only required for a subset of the recovery options. If you just want to rescue data from the drive, using the WinTech utility you don't need the code. You just need to authenticate, using name/pw or the sdb file from the server.

                          That was with older version of WinTech, new one asks for daily code.
