by the way you had a previous norton software... how did you remove/uninstall it?
thanks, yogi. after a while, i moved to this forum, since i thought the other one may have been the wrong place.
made all of your prescribed setting changes. rebooted. still doesn't work.
i uninstalled norton usingthe uninstall command. then searched and deleted any remaining symantec or norton files and folders. there were very few left.
did that. restarted, still not working.
what should the settings be in the networks and systems services tabs of the firewall? is there something special about Sierra Wireless HSDPA Network adapter?
i didn't mention that i am running XP Pro. does that make a difference?
your wireless router... does it have its own firewall? if it has one try disabling it... not really sure how to do that... try calling technical support for your router manufacturer... they may have the information we are looking for...
it's not a router. it's just a wireless internet USB card by sierra connecting to at&t 3g that plugs into my laptop. doesn't have firewall that i can find.

try uninstalling IE7... this will automatically revert back to IE6... better yet try downloading mozilla see if you'll have the same issue in terms of browsing... i'll try flagging this thread so other people can help...
ok, thanks. but remember, it's not just my browser. it doesn't connect to my e-mail server, either. it looks like for some reason, the firewall just won't let the computer see an internet connection, even though it's connected.
i have been using this exact same set-up with norton for 2 years, with absolutely no problem. just didn't want to pay 60 bucks to re-up at year-end. i had always been a mcafee guy (or avg) before.
don't have any experience w/moz, and never do any uninstall/reinst unless there's a problem (like now), so i'm a little nervous about this.
let's see if we get any other ideas . . .
