When I run the virus scan my laptop shuts down at some point in the middle of it. I reinstalled McAfee and still have the same problem. Based on looking at other posts here about this problem I downloaded IERegFix and ran it - after a couple of minutes it launches a program called ELNKInst which then complains that it can't find an Earthlink CAB file. I had to kill the program; I tried running virus scan again to see if it worked and it still does not, it still shuts my laptop down.
Laptops will shutdown automatically when they get too hot. This can happen when the CPU and Hard Drive is working very hard. This could be what's happening to your laptop. Heat is the enemy to computer parts and if the system detects things are too hot, may automatically shutdown to prevent permanent damage. It is also possible that heat could cause errors in the CPU/Memory/Hard Drive and cause a STOP/Blue Screen error.
In my opinion, this is the fault of the hardware not being properly cooled.
Atthe same time, this could be a problem with a specific file or program that is conflicting with McAfee. If this is the case, we first suggest you scan your computer in Safe Mode when most other programs are not loaded and possibly causing conflicts.
Removing Earthlink did the trick! Thx for the advice as well as the suggestions for the spyware tools, I ran them too. I'll also keep an eye on my laptop over-heating but so far I don't think that has been a problem so far. Also, I use XP and be sure to keep up-to-date on all critical and non-critical updates.
