If, as your description indicates, you have 'stuck' tasks, the following might be helpful to you :

ePolicy Orchestrator 5.1 or 5.3 server tasks do not expire after reaching abort timeTechnical Articles ID: KB83384
Likewise if the dB is running of resources Memory, HDD space) ePO performance will drop and take longer to run this or that task as a result, you might want to check the SQL server to be sure.
