Per KB85762, the service is meant to be set to manual. What you would want to look at is the application or system event logs to see if there are any issues with it starting, or if it is terminating for some reason. Check also the mfemactl.log on the client to see if there are any entries for McAfee processes being blocked. Refer to KB91526 for an example of that.
