queries related to McAfee Agent Backward Compatibility service



We have observed some issues with McAfee Agent Backward Compatibility service on a few servers in our environment


We have observed whenever we restart the servers, the MA backward compat service remains in stopped state

This service is always in manual mode. 

We have the following queries 


  • Why is the default start-up type for this service set to Manual for all the endpoints ?
  • What is the impact of this service on the DAT definitions ?
    • For example, whenever the service is stopped, endpoint does not pull latest DAT definitions from central ePO ? (based on sample evidences)
  • Post server reboot, it is observed that the service is stopped for few endpoints.
    • What triggers the service to stop post reboot ?
  • Since McAfee Agent Backward Compatibility service is critical for endpoints to fetch the latest DAT’s

How can we change the start-up type to Automatic so that the service start’s automatically post server reboot

Per KB85762, the service is meant to be set to manual.  What you would want to look at is the application or system event logs to see if there are any issues with it starting, or if it is terminating for some reason.  Check also the mfemactl.log on the client to see if there are any entries for McAfee processes being blocked.  Refer to KB91526 for an example of that.
