For communication, you can check last communication time for the client machine. To check functionality of security product, you can do Eicar test (https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB59742)
There are default queries under queries and reports for agent communication, dat or amcore content updates, etc. There are also default dashboards you can choose from to see what systems might be out of compliance for being up to date.
