Updating desktop with Client Task

Jump to solution

I created a task to update a desktop to patch 1 for 8.8. I created teh task, I send it to the client and then the client says it deleted it.

2011-11-18 15:06:51    i    #512    Sched    The task McAfee 8.8 Patch Update is successful

2011-11-18 15:06:51    i    #512    Sched    Scheduler: Task [McAfee 8.8 Patch Update] is finished

2011-11-18 15:06:51    I    #512    Sched    >>--ReleaseTask

2011-11-18 15:06:51    I    #512    Sched    <<--ReleaseTask

2011-11-18 15:06:51    I    #544    Agent    Agent Data Channel work wakeup, processing items

2011-11-18 15:06:51    i    #512    Sched    The task McAfee 8.8 Patch Update is deleted (ID={A85A3FA0-3635-4DE3-A94D-33E349ECAF03})

2011-11-18 15:06:51    I    #656    Sched    <<--CSchedule:Smiley Very HappyeleteTask

Yet it never updated the client. how do you get the task to run? the package was checked in as a evaluation. I want to test it before I send it out. Also global updating is disabled.

Did I miss a step?

A great light dawns    Well, I think it does, anyway

The task you're trying to use to apply the patch - called McAfee 8.8 Patch Update - is actually a deployment task, not an update task. Deployment tasks are only able to install a full installation package: they can't apply a patch to a product that's already installed. What's happening here is actually as expected: the deployment task gets as far as seeing that VSE 8.8 is installed, and then exits since it has nothing further to do.

To update your existing machines, make sure you have the patch package checked in (as opposed to the full installer with the patch included) and then run an update task, not a deployment task. When you configure the update task make sure that you have selected VSE in the list of things to update.

Hopefully that should take care of it

Joe

It looks like it ran, but there are slightly contradictory entries in the log... can you zip up and attach the agent log and mcscript log from this machine?

attached is the log files requested.

I didn't see the same lines as first post but it also didn't update the client. I set the task to run immediatley compared to run at a certain time.

Ah, OK - it looks like this was a Run Now task sent from the console, which creates a one-shot copy of a task and then deletes it when it's finished - so what you're seeing there is normal as far as I can tell.

The extra set of logs looks OK to me - am I missing something? Are these machines not applying the patch correctly?

correct, the patch doesn't seem to get installed. The first time I ran it it was not set as Run Now Task but run at 2:30pm which was half an hour after I updated the client.

Okay - a bit strange

Let's get a clean set of logs and see what they tell us. Can you try this:

1) Pick a machine that has not got the patch yet.

2) Put it into debug log mode as described in KB58966 - in particular make sure that dwDebugScript = 2 is set, and that the framework service is restarted after the changes are made.

2) Run the upgrade task on the machine, and once complete, zip and attach the agent and mcscript logs (and their backups, if any exist.)

That should give us a clean look at what's happening

ok, sorry it took so long. I have attached the logs. I also did the 3 solutions on the KB article you supplied, but it doesn't seem to have done anything different.

The update says it succeeded but again I don't see the update added to the shield. I didn't see any backup logs as this was a freshly built machine.

Sorry for the late reply - been away for a couple of days.

Something's not lining up here - can you zip up and attach the Tasks folder from the same machine?

Thanks -

Looking at the logs it is saying the dat and patch installed correctly. What are you not seeing in the shield?

No problem Joe, hope you had a good holiday.

Task folder is attached.

Bakerrl, At first it was showing it fialed, but now it shows it is successful, yet I do not see the patch level go up when you right click shield and go to about. Still showing patches = none and agent still does not show patch was installed.
