FramePkg.exe : NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction

Hi,

On one of the PC we manage through ePO, we have an install problem (we don't do push-install!).

We start the FramePkg.exe (CMA 3.6.1.255) program and get the following "16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem" error message (in an event bos or like) :

The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.

Does anyone have an idea what's happening ? (Please !)

thanks
Serge

Nope, it's on a plain normal Windows XP SP3 PC... CPU 2GHz, RAM 3GB... plenty HD.

And the Agent even comes from our ePO4-P2 server and has been used on numerous (i.e. +100) occasions before...

I never imagined the agent installer would use/need 16 bit DOS mode !!!

There is this fix

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314452

seen this lots of times with xp over the years, I used to fix it by copying autoexec.nt, config.nt and command .com from another working machine to the machine. (c:\windows\system32)

here is someone elses write up http://windowsxp.mvps.org/16bit.htm with a link to the files

RE: FramePkg.exe : NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction

Hi,

Thanks Tony for the suggestion, but it didn't work ;(

Right now I've installed the standalone VSE on this PC while I'm looking for a solution. I may have to call McAfee for this. I'd like to have that black sheep back in the flock.

As the user also reported Novell error messages at boot time, I'm checking with that team to see if there may be a relation.

Will keep you posted if I have anything new.
