Alternatives to McAfee

Anyone found a good alternative to McAfee?  I was given the responsibility of dealing with the ePO server at my current job.  It's been a few months and I'm on the phone with them every week, it's 2 steps forward and 1.5 steps back.  I've read through their documentation and while support tries to be helpful, it often feels like their understanding of the product isn't much more than mine.

Re: Alternatives to McAfee

The 2 biggest issues I'm having right now are updates and exclusions.

I've gotten a few test systems to update the drive encryption, agent, and endpoint security after multiple phone calls and emails to McAfee support.  I've taken a lot of notes but still don't have a clear path of:

     1. This is how to push updates to groups of test systems

     2. This is how to set it the updates as the new standard to deploy (current branch instead of evaluation branch)

Trying to exclude files and folders for Windows updates leads to me articles on Endpoint Security and  VirusScan Enterprise.  I'm not using the VirusScan Enterprise, and haven't found anything yet that gives a straightforward answer on what to do.

Perhaps all other enterprise products like McAfee have the same issues with a lack of documentation and support, but I've never worked in a business where the total cost of a enterprise product combined with the lack of documentation and support was considered acceptable.

Re: Alternatives to McAfee

There are several KB's regarding Windows update issues.  Access protection or vse exclusions can also apply to ENS.  See KB's 52624 and 67971 to start with.  You can also run threat event reports to see what else access protection may be blocking, or if VSE is detecting something falsely so you can use those events to know what to exclude.

As for updates to systems, that all depends on what you are updating (specific products) and version upgrades or just patches.  Most products, for just patches, you would check them in and push them out via an update task.  For version upgrades, you would use deployment tasks.  The release notes for each product will tell you which method is best.

There are a couple of things to consider for patch updates, especially if you want to test them out first.  Please refer to kb77063 for how to control how patch updates go out regarding branch usage.

PD26432 for epo best practices and you can also search the kb's for best practices for each product.

Let me know if that helps or if you have additional questions.
