ePO VirusScan Alert Triggered With Incomplete Info

Jump to solution

We have alerts configured that trigger emails when malware is detected and either handled or not handled by VirusScan Enterprise.

We sometimes get alerts that don't include the threat names.  It just has an underscore mark __ where the threat name should be.

So, we then have no idea if it is a real threat that we need to address or something we need to set up an exclusion policy for.  We can't set an exclusion because we don't have a threat name.

Example:

Number of events: 1
Source IPV6 addresses: 192.168.3.123
Source IPV4 addresses: 192.168.3.123
Threat Names: _
Detecting Product Names: VirusScan Enterprise

Source user name:
Source host name: examplehostname
Target File Name: c:\Users\janedoe\Downloads\zipfile.zip
Target Host Name: computerjanedoe
Target User Name: SYSTEM
Detected Product Host Name: computerjanedo
Threat Action Taken None
Source URL:
Source Process Name:
Target Process Name

I think the scheduled scan timed out, but the alert gives no details.

What can we do to get better info in the alerts?

You might want to also add event id.  You can match the event time/date with the oas log on client to see if it matches with a scan timed out event.  Given that it is a zip file, that would be a reasonable assumption.  I would also suggest not scanning archives.  That is known to cause scan timeouts frequently and can cause performance issues, as it has to decompress the zip, scan it, then re-compress it.  Zips are scanned when they are extracted anyway under normal usage when a user extracts it, so it isn't as if they would never be scanned.
