ePO Upgrade from 5.9.1 to 5.10.0 on Virtual Machines

Jump to solution

We are planning to upgrade our ePO from 5.9.1 to 5.10.0 Update 8. The servers where the ePO and database (Not installed on the same server) are hosted are VMs. I just want to know if performing VM snapshot of both servers before upgrading the ePO will be enough? Or it still required to do an ePO server task snapshot, ePO directories backup, and DB backup?

Thanks in advance.

Hello @arnieos

Thanks for your response.

I would suggest to go with both the backups.

I personally take both the backups not to be dependent on only VM backups.

So, I would recommend to have VM snapshot of ePO server and ePO Database.

After that you can run the ePO snapshot and once completed have a backup of the ePO database as well.

Hello @arnieos

Thanks for your response.

VM snapshot is fine but we have seen issues with VM snapshot as well and I would recommend you to please run the ePO server snapshot once done take the backup of the database.

Please refer KB66616.

Hi @vivs,

Thanks for your response. I'm told there are 2 type of VM snapshot - 1 is online and 1 is offline. Offline is a much reliable snapshot between the 2. Even if we use offline snapshot, do you think it is still required to perform ePO snapshot task and database backup?

Thanks.

It's always best to have more than one-two backup.  I would highly recommend to take additionally the DR Server Snapshot + DB Backup. "Just in case".

Hello @arnieos

Thanks for your response.

I would recommend you to have additional back-up as well like either the ePO Server Snapshot once done take ePO database backup or the other one file systems backup and ePO Database backup.

Please use KB66616 for the backup purpose.

I have seen customers taking all the three VM Snapshot , ePO Server Snapshot and File System.

So backup plan should be there if in case VM doesn't turn up properly or etc. etc.

Hi @vivs,

Got it. Planning to do it in this order.

1. Take vm snapshot of 2 servers.

2. Run ePO server snapshot task.

3. Take full backup of ePO database.

4. Backup ePO directories.

Or should the vm snapshot be in the last step?

Thanks for the help.
