There doesnt seem to be any difference between VM or hardware. Our affected machines are a mix of VM and hardware and server 2000 and 2003 however none of our XP desktops/laptops are affected.
My gut feeling is that it is McAfee driver related however nothing conclusive yet. I come to this conclusion because we cannot run the driver uninstall/install command from the knowledge base without getting errors on the affected machines.
I have now received the fix for this issue from McAfee and as I suspected it is related to the drivers, specifically that they do not load from dynamic disks. There is a simple regedit workaround and it is being patched in 8.7 patch 1.

I am going to open a case on this, since this just started on my workstation this morning....
This was deployed via ePO with 8.5 being installed prior, and by using Install for 8.7 and Ignore for 8.5. I prefer this as a safety net in case a machine does not install the new version after removing the old version.
