Restore ePO from snapshot on server - new hostname & IP

Jump to solution

Hi,

This article: https://docs.mcafee.com/bundle/epolicy-orchestrator-5.10.0-installation-guide/page/GUID-C9561397-EA3...

Indicates "The version of McAfee ePO being restored must be the same as the version used to create the snapshot in the database. You can download the correct version from the McAfee website."

I'm running ePO 5.10.0 update 7. The latest 5.10.0 full installation available on the download site is refresh 4 and that has to be installed before updating to the recent update. Installing the refresh 4 version is the only time you can select restore from snapshot.

So if the snapshot was generated from update 7 or 8, how do I install that version first before proceeding with the restore option?

Hello @Isagel

Thanks for your post.

You can download the ePO package from the product download site and once the restore is done you can apply the latest CU which applied on your existing ePO Server.

Also like to inform you that over the product download site you will get only the latest CU.

If you need any older CU in that case you need to connect with Support.

Please make sure that you have taken the backup of the current ePO Server and ePO Database with the help of the KB66616

Also this is ePO 5.10 so while restoring the Database please make sure that you are restoring both the database (main database and events_database).

The agent uses either the last known IP address, DNS name, or NetBIOS name of the ePO server. If you change any one of these values, make sure that the agents have a way to locate the server. The easiest way is to retain the existing DNS record and change it to be directed to the new IP address of the ePO server. After the agent successfully connects to the ePO server, it downloads an updated Sitelist.xml with the current information.

If you are changing the machine and trying to install the ePO with details you can also try using KB79283 for system transfer from one ePO Server to another and KB88822 for policy transfer from one ePO Server to another ePO Server.

Hi,

To restore ePO from snapshot, ideally CU version doesn't have matter.

After you restored ePO from snapshot, you can install latest one. Not necessarily should be running same CU version (like CU4) here. You can install CU7 or CU8 on restored ePO.

Just a little info for you.  The refresh version (refresh 4, for example) for the installer has nothing to do with the CU version.  Refresh version refers to the version of pre-installation auditor that is bundled with the installer.  That is periodically updated, whereas the installer itself does not change.  None of the cumulative updates are in the main installer, they have to be re-applied to the restored version each time.

One thing to note, if you are restoring with different servername and IP to a test environment, that is fine, but if this is to move epo to different hardware and you want agents to still connect, you may have to do some dns re-direction to point agents to the new hostname/ip.  Please also be aware of KB92556 for potential issue.
