Patch3 of VSE 8.7i deployment runs, finishes, no change

Jump to solution

Patch3 of VSE 8.7i deployment runs, client executes, finishes, but no change, nothing installed?

I'm using EPO 4.5 and agent 4.5. All clients running VSE 8.7 patch2 already.

Package checked into EPO is VirusScanEnterprise8.7iPatch3Repost.VSE870LMLRP3.zip

I've tried removing all previous deployments and hotfixes from the repository.

I've tried removing the client deployment task, creating a new one.

How to force the Patch3 to take hold?

Thanks

The file that you are deploying, VSE870LMLRP3.zip, is the full McAfee VirusScan 8.7i with Patch 3 embedded. This is not the correct package to use when installing just Patch 3, it is called VSE870P3.Zip.That is the reason why you are seeing no change. You can't use the repost package to upgrade a system that already has VSE 8.7i installed.

You will need to install the VSE870P3.Zip package and deploy it.

Have you waken the agent after deployment?

I think it will show hotfix 3 once it communicates next to ePO. You can always force the agent to communicate by waking it.

Excellent, thanks. Why do they call it a "Repost" of Patch3?

The repost refers to the entire package. Today, that is base VSE v8.7i and Patch 3, combined into a single installable package. This is intended for a fresh install of the entire package in one step.

For instance, VSE v8.5 with patch 6, did not install correctly on some Windows 7 systems. (Some could get it to work, but it really had problems.) By 'reposting' the latest patch into the base system, the installation worked.

But for those who simply want to apply updates to an existing install, all you need is the patch itself.

Have fun.

I've applied VirusScan Enterprise (VSE) 8.7i with Patch 3 (released April15)

Does this mean now that I can delete the Patch 3 Hotfix from the Master Repository which I installed last month?

Hope you can help,

If all of your machines are now on Patch 3, then yes, you could remove the Patch 3 package (as all you're interested in would be new machines which will get the combined VSE 8.7 + P3 package.)

If you've got any machines that a reunning 8.7 but *not* P3, then I'd leave it in, as these machines will need the patch package as opposed to the full 8.7+P3 package.

I do still have a few machine on patch 2 which haven't been turned on for months.  I assumed the repost would replace everything before (including the hotfix), seems strange not to.

Thanks again,

Unfortunately not - because this package is a full install, it's only applied to machines where the entire product is missing, whereas pacth installers are invoked if the specific patch level is missing. You could achieve the same thing by removing VSE and reinstalling it, but that's a fairly ugly process
