What version of the agent are you running? In the agent policy, is peer to peer enabled? If so, please disable it and test again. The mcscript log on the client is your best log to look at for update failures. Depending on the agent version, there might also be an mcscript deploy log, if it is a deployment task. The log will show whether it can get files from a repository or not and whether it is able to pass off the installer or updates to the point product.
There is a known issue that if peer to peer is enabled, it can cause the task to just hang there waiting on data or a response from the peer system.
