Ok that sounds like then it may be running into lack of drive space. The update will cause it to grow.

Is there any recommendation on how to increase the associated drive space and by how much? I looked at the database file and it is attached to Drive D which has 30GB free but the file size was only about 100MB. I increased the file size (by altering the initial size column) to 50,000 MB and even added another 20,000 MB file location but still have the same error.
When there is an upgrade or even update happening, there are a lot of transactions going on that will grow the transaction log. For an upgrade, we suggest at least 2-3x database size to allow for growth. You won't need that much probably for an update, but you might need to at least have double the space available. Make sure the files are not limited in any way for growth, they need unlimited growth.
