Database access denied error, even though configuration page test states connection successful

Hi all,

  EPO 9.5 server.

Currently if we try to log on, we get an error "

Unable to connect to the database. Try again. If the issue reoccurs, notify your product administrator to navigate to {0} on the application server system and verify the database connection settings.

The event parser service also fails to start.

Both the server_<servername> log and the eventparser_servername log show similar error messages

20180322012647 I #02136 EPODAL   Using SQL Authentication for [ServerName\SQLEXPRESS,49189].[ePO_ServerName]
20180322012720 E #02136 EPODAL   ePOData_Connection.cpp(664): COM Error 0x80004005, source=Microsoft OLE DB Provider for SQL Server, desc=[DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied., msg=Unspecified error

Upon going to https://servername/core/config

i can see that the database is set to go to the correct server and instance, that the username is set to sa.

If it hit the "test connection" button, i get "the database connection was tested successfully"

So - i have a config page which is telling me that everything is fine, and logs that are throwing access denied errors.

i can open the SQL instance in SQL manager and all appears to be on order. the sa account has db_owner over the EPO database....

the firewall is off, so the port is not being blocked....

suggestions ?

Re: Database access denied error, even though configuration page test states connection successful

Any errors in the sql error logs?  Try restarting sql services or reboot the sql server (if possible), then restart epo services.  The core/config may test successfully, but things still be wrong on the sql side - it is only checking the ability to connect, not permissions or any other issues.  When did this issue start and what changed?  Any Windows updates or anything like that on epo or sql side?  What kind of errors do you see in the orion log (.....epolicy orchestrator\server\logs)?  What version epo?

Re: Database access denied error, even though configuration page test states connection successful

Hey,

so...

1) SQL and mcafee services have been restarted (as has the server) - no difference

2) The issue started occuring two days ago

3) Patches were lat applied at the start of this month (1/03/2018) - so the enviornment had been working for 20-ish days after patches being applied

4) As far as im aware, nothing had changed between when it was working - and when it wasnt (but obviously something has!)

5) EPO is version 9.5

6) sure. Orion logs show the following

none of which looks particularly useful to me.

I'd be happy to zip up all the logs and send them directly to you if you think that will help.

Re: Database access denied error, even though configuration page test states connection successful

Go through KB87731, solution 1 ro reorder the cipher suite on the sql server.  This is most likely due to Windows security updates and the issue not being manifested right away due to any possible delayed reboots.

Re: Database access denied error, even though configuration page test states connection successful

Please open a ticket with McAfee if you haven't already and get a mer from the epo and sql servers, as well as sql error logs for them to review.  mer.mcafee.com - when you run the mer, be sure to right-click on it, run as administrator, and choose the specific products for that system, such as epo, vse, ens, agent, or whatever is applicable.
