DB mirroring and HA

Jump to solution

Team,

We had issue today where McAfee app was unable to open DB. When checked from DB side with limited access, I found DB was showing restoring in progress.

Escalate the issue to DBA and here is the response I got below.

PRINCIPAL database changed to Mirror due to role synchronization.

Mirroring is the High Availability technology and it  is not beneficial if the application doesn’t have auto routing feature. I have explained this in the beginning.

This can be achieved by configuring the application config files.

My understanding about DB mirroring and failover is all should be configured from sQl server side . I am not aware of configuring from the application side config files.

Yea, database mirroring is strictly an sql feature.  We have a feature in server settings, user policies called database mirroring, but that is not sql db mirroring.  That feature is just caching ldap user info in db rather than having epo or ah query ldap all the time for user policies.  So I know of no config needed on the epo side for sql database mirroring or HA.

Yes, I am familiar with it and have a test epo and sql server both clustered.  EPO has to point to the virtual name/ip of the sql cluster to function properly.

I got more question. How does ePO know which DB to connect during a failover if ePO was configured to use the principal during installation.

That is all handled on the sql side for failover, but it also depends on how they have things set up.  In a cluster, epo connects to the virtual cluster name and is not aware of which node is active.  I am not familiar enough if HA works kind of the same or not, you might want to ask the dba.  It should be transparent to any applications using a database.

Virtual Cluster Name make sense. I posted here to see anyone is familiar with SQL clustering and  setting ePO with virtual Cluster Name or Listener.
