due to 7.6.2 installation guide:
"Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE), version 1.7, also referred to as Java 7, or later
JRE is required for running the user interface.
Web Gateway 7.5.1 is the last main version to support JRE 1.6 (Java 6). Beginning with version 7.5.2, Web Gateway, requires JRE 1.7 or 1.8 (Java 7 or 8).
As support for Java 7 will also terminate soon, we encourage you to start using
Java 8 if you are not using it already"

Regarding your question, unfortunately, I cannot find any other information about the support of later versions of java with older MWG version 7.6.2.

Due to 7.8.2 installation guide:
"Oracle Java Runtime Environment (JRE), version 1.8, also referred to as Java 8, or later
JRE is required if you require Java support for working with the interface of Web Gateway. You can,
however, work with this interface and not require Java support."

But 7.8.2 also support HTML UI version where no Java support is required:
"As a Java applet in your browser
• As a Java Web Start application
• As an HTML application in your browser"

Further, not sure if you are aware but just want to inform you that version 7.6.2 is EOL since the end of 2018.
If you have issues in future and want to contact support, you will need to upgrade to a supported version at first.

does the java applet GUI work very slow or the load time (time for the GUI to start) is high? It is a known issue! Do you have Antivirus (especially McAfee) installed? - whitelist Java and Java cache folders.

You really have to upgrade your old MWG version to at least 7.8.2 - your old version contains some security vulnerabilities, so just by running this outdated version you put your users at risk! Besides that, after the upgrade you can use GUI without java, as @mkutrieba described.
