clients-per-query increased to 15

hi,

we had a failure,

proxy was not able to handle traffic anymore,

It is difficult to say If it was DNS problem or proxy problem

in the message log I've found many of these entries:

clients-per-query increased to 15

clients-per-query increased to 20

...

I've found this article in the KB but does apply to webgateway 7.4.1 as well?

https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB77234

What are relevant logs to use in troubleshooting DNS problems?

thanks,

Ottavio

That KB is related to EWS, not MWG. There is not a specific log for DNS problems. You could look in the dashboards to see if the DNS servers were delayed at that time.

I have not seen those messages on a MWG before. Are you using BIND? Do you have an SR open?

Jon

Re: clients-per-query increased to 15

hi,

yes I know that the article is for another product,

that's why I've opened a discussion in this forum,

I don't have an SR and no BIND used,

pretty sure that DNS was not performing well at that time,

but the proxy should not fail......

thanks,

Re: clients-per-query increased to 15

Hi Ottavio,

DNS is very essential to MWG's ability to handle traffic quickly. If the DNS servers are down, then that is going to degrade it's ability to handle the traffic efficiently.

Were there multiple DNS servers in place, and only one was down/slow? Or are there a number of them specified, and all were down/slow?

Best,

Jon

we have a primary and a secondary DNS, but are externally managed

the company that handle them told us that at the time of the failure the proxy was starting an abnormal amount of connections to the DNS.
