Will we ever get off Java?

Jump to solution

Java continues to be a thorn in the side of MWG admins everywhere. Today I was once again unable to administer my clusters because Java vulns were released and everything got locked down. This is becoming more of a problem with the current Java release, see the attached pictures from the official site. (http://java.com/en/download/help/jcp_security.xml)

Please, pretty please, move away from Java...

I know that someone will probably point out that Java 8.20 and up have an exception list that fixes this, but we have yet to get that to work and Oracle says we have entered the correct syntax.

Just as interim update:

We will keep Java for some time. Building the new one is not easy, but we will not require Applets any more. Part of the current 7.6 project.

So what does this mean exactly? That MWG will work in Chrome again (as well as edge and FF when they remove Java)? Presumably this would be using web start?

Exactly. MWG will again work nicely with any browser.

The UI will work with Chrome (and any other browser) - not in Chrome. Browser will be used for

  • First access to Web Start launcher configuration (JNLP file).
  • Some callouts (e.g. displaying files) - basically everything that uses a browser tab now.

Yes, we are using Java Web Start for that.

Morning!

A beta version is available that has the new Web Start UI available. Please use MWG 7.6.1 to test.

thanks,

Michael
