Why does Web Reporter store the IP address IPV4 as IPv6 format in the SQL data base?

Jump to solution

Our customer performs queries in the SQL data base to provide specific security reports. But they are saying that IP address is being recorded as IPv6 format.

I would linke a help to answer these two questions:

Why does Web Reporter store the IP address IPV4 as IPv6 format in the SQL data base?

Is there a way to record the IP address as IPv4?

Thanks,

Ronaldo

Hello Ronaldo,

In Web Reporter 5.2.0, support was added so that users could report on IPv6 addresses.  With this feature, the decision was made to store all IP addresses, whether IPv4 or IPv6, in IPv6 format to be consistent for the sake of queries and filters.  When running a report with IPv4 addresses, a conversion is performed in Web Reporter from the values stored in the database on any IP address that is an IPv4 address so that it is displayed in reports in the IPv4 format.

It is not possible to configure Web Reporter to revert to storing IPv4 addresses in IPv4 format.

Is there a reason that you are running a query outside of one that is configured and executed through the UI?  I suggest instead of trying to perform conversions on the IP addresses with a hand-written query that instead you seek assistance with the query you are trying to run so that it can be done through Web Reporter.

Before we upgrade the Web Reporter from version 5.1 to 5.2, the IP address were appearing like the following in te data base:

wr-ipv4.png

After we do upgrade to version 5.2 the IP address is appearing like the following in the data base:

wr-ipv6.png

When I use the Web Reporter dashboard to see the information, it is working fine. As this following screenshot:
