The Host is not resolvable MGW 7.8.2.7.0

Jump to solution

Good afternoon,

I am trying to open a link in an email that gives me this 'Host Not Resolvable' error.

I did a rule trace and it doesn't look like MGW is blocking this.

I went ahead and forwarded the email to a laptop that's off the network (wifi only) and I was able to open the links with no worries. I have been browsing the Support forums trying to find a solution as to why I keep getting the error message but to no avail.

Any suggestions on how I can remedy this issue?

Thank you,

David

Hi David,

the answer is quite simple: your Webgateway cannot resolve the FQDN with the configured DNS Servers.
Please check your DNS configuration:

There should be a DNS that is able to get a resolution for marketing.bmifcu.org.
If you use the DNS Servers of your Windows Domain, they may not allow DNS forwarding for the Webgateway. So you'll probably have to do some deeper DNS investigation on this.

Another possibility would be to insert the Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8) as tertiary DNS, in case there no third DNS configured yet. But on this you may have to allow outbound DNS requests on port 53 for your Webgateway.

Best regards

Hi David,

Hope you are doing well.

Host Not Resolvable:-

This message will be displayed if Web Gateway is unable to contact the DNS server or if the DNS server returns a “No Such Name” response

The issue here is not with MWG but with the DNS servers configured in MWG.

Please refer below link for more information Host not resolvable error:-

https://community.mcafee.com/t5/Documents/Web-Gateway-Understanding-HTTP-502-s/ta-p/554073

nslookup marketing.bmifcu.org
Server: 8.8.8.8
Address: 8.8.8.8#53

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: marketing.bmifcu.org
Address: 206.71.80.80

It is seen that this URL resolves to IP Address 206.71.80.80.

A workaround could also be put in place on the Web Gateway’s hosts file. This would allow Web Gateway to resolve the hostname to an IP address without the need of a DNS Query. The hosts file can be edited on version 7.x under Configuration > File Editor > hosts.

Please refer attached screenshot for reference.
