Recommended way to migrate old physical MWG to a new virtual appliance

Hi, we have MWG 7.6.072 on a physical server, and we wish to migrate to a virtual appliance with one of the latest versions (7.8.2\8.1)

What is the recommended path for this? If we would just build a new clean virtual appliance, can we export the policy+settings+lists from the old server and import to the new one? is there any problem importing from such an old version?

Re: Recommended way to migrate old physical MWG to a new virtual appliance

Hi,

Hope you are doing well.

You can setup a new virtual MWG and import complete backup (configuration+ policy) taken from current MWG  into the new MWG  if you want the same complete settings on the new MWG.

Below article link will assist in restoring your configuration from a backup in the event of an appliance replacement or new VM installation.

The major hurdle for restoring a backup onto a new/replacement appliance is the use of a UUID (universally unique identifier) as an identifier for the system. The Web Gateway backup contains all configurations and policies for your entire central management cluster. The UUID identifies the configuration part (IP, DNS, routing and so on) for each individual machine. If an appliance gets replaced (due to hardware issues or model upgrades), the UUID changes and the backup cannot be restored with default methods. This article will describe how you can manually restore the backup and enforce the configuration of the old UUID to the new/replacement appliance (new UUID).

Thanks for the quick answer!

as far as you know, there shouldn't be a problem with importing data from 7.6.0 version to a 7.8.2 version? its about 3 years difference in release dates between them..

Hi,

Yes a backup taken from 7.6 version can be imported in 7.8 version MWG
