responses crossed int he mail...

Also, you can host the PAC file on any web server and give it any name you desire as long as the web server knows the correct mime type.

Version 7 can be any name, you just put the path in like;

http://(ipaddress):4713/files/anyname.pac

The file can be any name as long as that's what you put in the browser settings.

So are you saying IF I upgrade to ver. 7 I can have a .pac file named wpad.pac ?

Not so on 6.8.7

My browser setting reads like

URL config file

http://proxy.swmed.edu/wpad.pac

Re: Non-Standard .PAC file extension

just for everybody's education - WPAD stands for the Web Proxy Auto Discovery protocol. It is the M$ way of autoconfiguring proxies.

A good description is available on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_Proxy_Autodiscovery_Protocol

It depends on how you are deploying. And what version of MWG.

Version 6.x of MWG codes the URL to http://(ipaddress):9999/proxy.pac

It also aliases it to the name wpad.dat.

Version 7 can be any name, you just put the path in like;

http://(ipaddress):4713/files/anyname.pac

The file can be any name as long as that's what you put in the browser settings.

The only time it MUST be named wpad.dat is when you are using Proxy Auto Discovery and it is defaulting to DNS to locate the PAC file. In that case, the file must reside at the url:

http://wpad.mydomain.com:80/wpad.dat
