CVE-2020-10713 - is the Web Gateway affected ?

Hi!

One of our customer asked me, if the McAfee Web Gateway is affected by CVE-2020-10713 , aka " Boot Hole" in Grub2 and if a fix is in development? He is on version 8.2.7 (not the latest, I know).

Is there any information about this?

Best regards,

Ralf

Hi Ralf,

We have raised a request with Engineering to check whether mwg is susceptible to this vulnerability.

I will update this post once we have a reply from them.

Re: CVE-2020-10713 - is the Web Gateway affected ?

Hi All,

So far, this is the update from Engineering:

CVE-2020-10713 is a buffer overflow vulnerability in GRUB2.

According to the following site, GRUB2 whose version is prior to 2.06 is affected.

https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2020-10713

The common impact of the vulnerability in the grub2 package version which is described on the webpage mentioned above:

1) The MWG does not use Secure Boot. (In response to "This flaw also allows the bypass of Secure Boot protections" from the above description)
2) One of the scenarios described on the website requires "root" access of the attacker. If the user has "root" access to the MWG he is able to install an arbitrary kernel(or other packages) on the system. (Please make sure the root access is limited to a few users)

From the above conclusion, we can rate CVE-2020-10713 to be of moderate risk.

Engineering is still working on updating the grub2 version in an upcoming version.

I will keep you posted once the grub related fix is confirmed.

Regards,
Shibani
