winlogon.exe with high CPU because of mcshield.exe, also high CPU

Jump to solution

Core 2 Duo

Windows XP SP3

McAfee Security Centre 11.6.477

McAfee Virus Scan 15.6.238

Checked for updates, none available.

Basically, around every 5 seconds mcshield.exe along with winlogon.exe will spike in CPU, to around 30% and 45% respectively. This obviously makes other running programs slow down immensely and it even makes games simply unplayable at times.

Two things I've noticed, the latter being a temporary fix, for me at least.

Firstly, this seems to get worse the longer the computer has been running. It gets extremely bad after being on for about 8 hours.

Secondly, a somewhat shoddy fix is to disable Real-Time Scanning and enable it again, doing this reduces the intensity of the spikes. (At least until it finally increases over time) Otherwise a computer reboot is needed.

This is definitely a problem with Real-Time Scanning, definitely a problem with mcshield.exe.

Anyone actually got a proper fix, maybe McAfee? Because this is getting stupid.

Ok first thought are you running at lower than 1024*-768 resolution 12.1 requires at least this and will not install if not set higher.

Second if you have a subscription  direct from McAfee and not from say your ISP you can uninstall and reinstall via

http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?lc=1033&id=TS101331

reboot and run

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/Mcpreinstall.exe

and reinstall from your account

Who do/did you get your Mcafee from? Asking as this thread re same issue seems to say the new 12.1 version fixes this issue?

https://community.mcafee.com/message/269133#269133

If yours is from an isp or Mcafee partner you need to stir them to upgrade to 12.1 as some partners are a bit slow doing so in the past.

I've honestly got no idea. I've got a subscription with McAfee, I thought that would be enough to upgrade to 12.1?

I had read that post but it confused me, because I wasn't getting any 12.1 version when looking for updates.

I've got dual monitors, both with higher resolution.

Uninstalled from add/remove programs, rebooted.

Used MCPR, rebooted again.

Ran preinstall from your link.

Logged into my McAfee account, downloaded the setup.

Installed.

Err, well.

McAfee Secuirty centre affid: 105

Version still 11.6 and Build still 11.6.477

After all that mess, still no 12.1, although I'll check if the problem still persists.

That MCPR really needs to be built into the uninstaller at least.

You got your Mcafee from Dell They have not pushed the upgrade to 12.1 yet or at least to all their users. Mcafee is trying to get their partners to upgrade but the final date is up to dell etc.

I have to say, the problem has actually subsided for now.

Thank you very much for the help, even though it was just a long-winded re-install.

Alright, hopefully I'll get the upgrade soon then.

Take care.
