I trust that this is Vista SP2 and totally up to date including Internet Explorer 9 (even if you never use it)?
McAfee protects you against spyware, malware etc.
Vista includes Windows Defender which is built-in anti-spyware but when you install McAfee it gets disabled. You can re-enable it via Control Panel > Security > Windows Defender.
