One of my computers just got infected with "Windows 7 Restore Virus" while McAfee Total Protection was running. McAfee could not find the virus when I did a scan and the chat technician was totally unaware of this virus.
Has this (virus and/or chat) happened to anyone else?
Is there a McAfee removal tool for this virus?
I just downloaded a trial version of AVG scan that seems to have eliminated the problem.
Does anyone have experience with this other product?
Most of the consumer antivirus products aren't very good at detecting these fake anti-malware problems. There's a removal guide here which we have been recommending: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-removal/remove-windows-restore (scroll down as the top links are all adverts) - is that the one?
Are you using McAfee Consumer or Enterprise products?
I do know that McAfee is working on the problem and has one or two tools to help. I did a blurb here on it: https://community.mcafee.com/docs/DOC-2168
The link to Bleeping computer shown above worked, in that it removed the Windows 7 Restore Virus. However, the last part of the process had me use the unhide.exe so that the hidden files would show again, that part did not work. All the files in Start -> All Programs are showing empty folders. I can find a few of the files by drilling down to the program files but I was wondering if there was an easier \ faster way to recover the links?
If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance
I'm having the same issue after being caught by "Windows 7 repair".
The links appear to be held in a directory structure under C:\ProgramData, and form what i've seen so far it may have actually deleted the links that were in there to the programs rather han hidden them.
Bleeping Computer Unhide.exe did not reveal them, and a check via a command window appeard to confirm the worst, that they are indeed empty.
resoring them would look like a tedious job of copying some shortcuts back into the structure. For the windows related links, I'm hoping that copying this from another PC and dropping the links in might suffice.
Still not sure if this will give me back the Administrative Tools that have vanished from control panel.
Hope that helps a bit...i'd be interested in any better ideas as well.
I just gave up trying to restore everything and reinstalled Windowss 7. I kept my old Windows 7 to help me resore as much of the old info as possible. I know that this is not much help but at some point it becomes less work to just give in.
I've done that many times, believe me. From XP through Vista and Windows 7, all of them.
Don't forget to apply SP1 to Windows 7 and there's help with that here: https://community.mcafee.com/docs/DOC-2205
g-dave - check out my post - I have fixed this now 5 times, tedious but no reinstall and my clients were happy to get there machines back with their data intact and no reinstall!
Boy did I ever get this virus! I had the same problems with McAfee not finding it on my computer, and finally had to call Dell support and pay them the big bucks to remove the thing. They've sent me the industrial strength version of Norton, but I have yet to give it a go. At this point, I'm leary of all these supposed virus protection programs, and more than a little fed up.
