I have a Toshiba Satellite P105-S6064; Windows XP Service Pack 3. McAfee Security Suite 9.0; Virus Scan 13.0; Firewall 10.0.
My last complete scan was Jan. 28. Since then, I got the vIrtumonde, or vundo trojan. I believe I have cured that problem, spending a whole day doing research and using various programs and removal tools. A quick scan from any of the malware programs I have doesn't find anything.
I cannot complete an entire virus scan. The computer will shut itself down.
I had noticed this problem earlier, when I attributed it to overheating, or to using too much resources (trying to create a DVD in Intervideo WinDVD).
However, now I can't complete a McAfee scan. I don't know what file it stops on.
I'm doing chkdsk /r to see if any anomolies are returned. But I think I need some expert advice!
VirusScan tends to be a bit of a hog, it's the nature of the beast I'm afraid.
You could check if it's set to use minimal resources as in the attached thumbnail.
(Reached via double-clicking the taskbar icon to open Security Center, then clicking Advanced Options (bottom left), then Configure (left), then Computer & Files (top left), then Advanced (right), then Custom Scan at the left). That would mean doing a manual scan in future rather than an automatic one, but it may help.
Meanwhile make sure that your system is actually free of infection by running Hijackthis, don't let it fiz anything however, instead post its log on one of the following forums for expert advice.

I followed the directions for scanning in DOS; I started the scan about noon, and at 5 p.m. it was still running. I was busy with a few tasks, and when I looked at the computer about 5:06, it had shut off.
The report.txt file was huge, with every line ending in ...is OK. However, at the end it had no summary, so I'm supposing it just shut itself down without finishing.
I have this laptop sitting up on a cooling rack (the kind you cool cookies on) so it gets air circulation. Is my next stop the repair shop? :confused:
I went over to the Tech Guys Forum, and they helped me root out an item that was a remainder from vundo. I used Hijackthis and Combofix, and was very happy with the help I received.
However, after all that I attempted a McAfee scan. It got to about 80% and the computer shut down.
This computer can run all evening until I shut it down, but I'm still mystified as to why McAfee can't complete. Do I need a different security system, or does McAfee have any ideas about this problem?
I'm going to buy a chill pad and see if that helps.

I suspect it's caused by an infection or a remainder of that. Singular or plural. Vundo is nasty. It's conceivable that there are other undetected infections. You could try more scans by other software.
It's possible that the McAfee software has been corrupted. In that case, you can uninstall (use MCPR plus instructions), and reinstall. It's also possible that your OS has been corrupted. While I can't preclude that it can be repaired, a full reformat followed by an installation of the OS plus the rest would be necessary.
I, too, have had the same problem. Last month I tried doing a full McAfee scan, and it shuts off! I've had problems with my computer shutting off suddenly in other instances, too. I haven't done a full computer scan in more than 30 days because of it. I might be taking my computer in to have it checked out. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista.
