can't update virus definitions with windows outbound firewall enabled

I am running a Windoes 2008 64bit Server with the Windows Server inbound and outblond firewall enabled.

McAfee virus defintion updates are prevented by the outbound firewall.

I am trying to find out which applications to allow or ports to open.

I tried all kinds of combinations but did not succeed.

What McAfee product is this?  The home products aren't compatible with server environments.  I will have to move this topic to the appropriate area.

I am Using Virus Scan Enterprise 8.7.0i. It works fine with the server. The only issue I have is that it does not get virus updates with the outbound firewall turned on.

Moved from Home and Home Office > Virus and Spyware Protection to Business > System Security > VirusScan Enterprise for better attention.

Re: can't update virus definitions with windows outbound firewall enabled

Keel,

Maybe the links below will help you set up the rules for your Windows 2008 Server firewall. Simply allow the McAfee updater through the firewall. Try the first link first, as it's the standard GUI method of configuring the firewall.:

Overview of the Windows Server 2008  Firewall with Advanced Security Part 2: Inbound and Outbound Firewall  Rules

How to Configure Windows 2008 Advanced  Firewall with the NETSH CLI

Hope this helps.

Re: can't update virus definitions with windows outbound firewall enabled

I do allow [%ProgramFiles% (x86)\McAfee\VirusScan Enterprise\mcupdate.exe] through the oubound firewall but that does not solve the problem. Is there any other application I have to enable?

Re: can't update virus definitions with windows outbound firewall enabled

I'm not on a McAfee machine right now, but try allowing the "Frameworkservice.exe" as well.

Hope this helps.

Re: can't update virus definitions with windows outbound firewall enabled

I added [%ProgramFiles% (x86)\McAfee\Common Framework\FrameworkService.exe] but McAfee Virus Update still can't succeed.

(Reminder, if I turn off the Outboud firewall then the McAfee Virus Update works fine. Also, all other programs I allow through the outbound firewall work as expected. Hence there is no problem with the firewall but we simply don't know which McAfee processes to allow through the firewall for the update to succeed.)

Have you checked your firewall logs? It should write which applications were blocked.
