Virusscan 8.8 Patch 8 install on Windows 10

Jump to solution

I'm having some performance issues with Virusscan 8.8 Patch 8 install on Windows 10 x64 Enterprise 1607. I never experience this issue on Windows 7 x64 Ent.

I deploy the agent and once installed, the agent checks in to EPO and sees the PC needs Virusscan. The virusscan install initiates and proceeds to install.

Here's the issue, once the VSE install starts on Windows 10, after about 5-8 minutes of running, MFEHIDIN.EXE(McAfee System Core Installer) begins using between 25-50% CPU and the mouse gets very laggy. After about 20-25 minutes from the time the install actually started, the install finally finishes(task is freed in the mcafee status monitor) and the CPU use goes back to normal/mouse operates normal. A typical windows 7 install of mcafee takes 10 minutes or less and never exhibits this problem. Windows 10 as I mentioned it taking at least twice as long.

I'm running Agent 5.0.4.283 and VSE 8.8 Patch 8.

An interesting note is if I install manually VSE first, then load the agent, it installs in less than 10 minutes much like windows 7.

This is there official response. Fingers crossed that Patch 9 does in fact fix the problem.

"A long Syscore install time is a known issue with the version provided by VirusScan Patch 8 and a few other products. I have included a link below to our KB article highlighting this issue. We expect this to be resolved in patch 9 of VSE, which is expected in the next month or two. "

Slow but successful installation of Data Loss Prevention Endpoint, Endpoint Security, Host Intrusion Prevention, McAfee Agent, or VirusScan Enterprise

A couple of questions:

1) Win10 & Win7 on the same network segment

2) What are the download response times for Win10 & Win7 using http:// [epo-servername:port# 80 or 8443] /Software/Current/VIRUSCAN8800/Install/0000/vse880.msi

3) FW disabled on either

4) UAC disabled on either

5) What type of install account is being use

A couple of questions:

1) Win10 & Win7 on the same network segment

     Yes.

2) What are the download response times for Win10 & Win7 using http:// [epo-servername:port# 80 or 8443] /Software/Current/VIRUSCAN8800/Install/0000/vse880.msi

I cannot seem to access the file through http nor https to test that. However, I will say this, which I think will answer your question. Once I've loaded the agent and the machine checks in for tasks, the time it takes to download the      install files for VSE 8.8 is pretty much identical. It pulls down all the files and intiaties the install in less than a minute on both Windows 7 and Windows 10.

3) FW disabled on either

     No.

4) UAC disabled on either

     Yes, both.

5) What type of install account is being use

I've tried a local administrator account and a domain administrator account.

For giggles - check the VirusScan installation log, it may contain reference to a generic error code with reference to the SystemCore portion of the product installation.

Checked the logs, nothing is jumping out at me. I can post them if that would help.

Still fighting this problem. Upgraded to Agent 5.0.4.449 hoping that might fix something but no luck. Randomly, some workstations will install VSE 8.8 in about five minutes but the major of of them are still taking 20+ minutes to install. Seriously, is no one else having issues with installing VSE 8.8 on Win10 Ent x64?!

As a test - try installing 4.8.0.2043 and then deploy VSE8.8P8 to your Win10 devices...if it works, upgrade the agent to 5.X.

Well, I have already established per my original post that installing VSE manually first works as expected. The install takes less than 10 minutes then I can install the agent. However, my preferred method is installing the agent and letting the workstation receive its tasks. I was under the impression this was the best practice. Putting the agent on first in Win10 is causing some type of problem it seems.

I was kinda thinking there is an issue with the 5.X agent, so, for testing - all through the ePO console - install a different agent version and see how it goes.
