VSE Patch 11 on Win7x64 - not able to update DAT files

Jump to solution

Hi,

We are updating Windows 7 machines with Patch 11.  The installs are succeeding, but some machines are not updating DAT files.  We are using setupvse.exe and are not using EPO.

Updatelog.txt just looks like

9/7/2018 4:07:40 PM domain\user Starting task: AutoUpdate
9/7/2018 4:09:08 PM domain\user Starting task: AutoUpdate
9/7/2018 4:09:40 PM domain\user Starting task: AutoUpdate

I tried an update to patch 11 from patch 9 on a clean/up to date Win7 image, and was not able to reproduce the problem.

We usually update VSE with batch files that are basically:

msiexec /x {CE15D1B6-19B6-4D4D-8F43-CF5D2C3356FF} REMOVE=ALL REBOOT=R /passive

"\\path\SetupVSE.Exe" REBOOT=R  /qbn

but the problem persists after uninstalling and doing a manual click-through install from setupvse.

I did successfully run yesterday's superdat installer on one machine, and it picked up the update, but further attempts to run autoupdate failed.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you.

@brett42 In addition to @johma's excellent points, it could be that the issue resides within the McAfee Agent that facilitates the DAT updates for the system. If the already suggested items do not correct the issue, I would advise reviewing your masvc (shows invokation of the task to update) and mcscript logs (shows files being downloaded) of the McAfee Agent logging and see if there is an issue occurring there. The logs can be found in C:\ProgramData\McAfee\Agent\logs

Hi,

A symptom of this :

9/7/2018 4:07:40 PM domain\user Starting task: AutoUpdate
9/7/2018 4:09:08 PM domain\user Starting task: AutoUpdate
9/7/2018 4:09:40 PM domain\user Starting task: AutoUpdate

Could be where a proxy is used and the authentication is locked down too far.  Do these machines have direct internet connectivity or via a proxy that may be restricted access by username/domain account etc..

If this is only affecting some machines and not all, then there are 2 options.

1. Rather than uninstalling completely and rebooting which appears to be what you are doing with the batch script. Have you tried to install just the Patch file? Go to the download site and click on Patches option, download the VSE880P11.ZIP.

Extract these file to the machine and run then SetupVSE.exe option

Does the DAT fail behaviour persist ( After patch and Reboot )?

2. In the task properties for AutoUpdate, select Task, do you apply "User Account Settings" there? What happens if you leave this blank ( to use SYSTEM credentials ) for the update task?

Also, it is far better to copy the files to the machine and run the setup from the local box. This can prevent some issues when updating the installer tries to find the original install set. If this is not available some probems can occur.

It did seem to be related to the agent.  I added

msiexec /x {386A9C46-C31F-42E8-AC39-583A3174945A} REMOVE=ALL REBOOT=R /passive
msiexec /x {80684F9A-6B01-4F3F-A8C7-C4B7BDF072F1} REMOVE=ALL REBOOT=R /passive
msiexec /x {265FA622-A254-49fb-B380-D9EF9ABFD32D} REMOVE=ALL REBOOT=R /passive
msiexec /x {2B4B02CD-CA9E-4024-9B9B-2EA9950EEC11} REMOVE=ALL REBOOT=R /passive

msiexec /x {76473CBB-FE8D-4E3A-9591-CD6EFB621063} REMOVE=ALL REBOOT=R /passive
msiexec /x {EBF3D65F-011E-44D2-8F4F-C74B52682EDD} REMOVE=ALL REBOOT=R /passive
msiexec /x {1FDB8EC6-BAF1-42F9-8E09-4D9AB369F1B5} REMOVE=ALL REBOOT=R /passive
msiexec /x {11FEE8E5-D9BD-4AC1-8074-5169069DF812} REMOVE=ALL REBOOT=R /passive

Based on https://kb.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB65863&pmv=print to the batch file to also uninstall any version of the agent it finds before the reinstall, and was able to update once it finished.

Thank you.
