Update Dat file fails with error: Generic script error

Hi all,

1 of our servers won't  and i don't know how to fix it.

When i run "Update now" the update to the new dat file fails with the error: Generic script error.

I tried the sollution metioned in article:   https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB65815&pmv=print but that fails also.

A manual update with a sDat file works fine without a problem.

Re: Update Dat file fails with error: Generic script error

I've seen this sort of error occur when vsupdate.dll isn't registered properly.

try

regsvr32 /s "c:\program files\Mcafee\Virusscan\vsupdate.dll"

and try updating again.

Otherwise, unistall Virusscan and reinstall and see if that helps.

Re: Update Dat file fails with error: Generic script error

Hi PhilR,

Thank for the sugestion but it didn't help.

I tried a reinstall of McAfee and the agent before but the problem still excist.

I can keep the the server up to date using a Superdat but that doesn't resolve the problem, it is only a workarround.

Re: Update Dat file fails with error: Generic script error

Might be best to raise a support call with McAfee.

But look here first:

https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB66848

Other thing to do is reinstall the McAfee Agent.

Try Agent 4.8 Patch 1 (4.8 without Patch 1 is best avoided).

Cheers,

Phil

Re: Update Dat file fails with error: Generic script error

Hi Phil,

That is the strange thing.

The folder mentioned in the article is not excisting.

Reinstallation was done before but that didn't resolve a problem.

What about trying s superdat with the /f option?

Re: Update Dat file fails with error: Generic script error

That doesn't fix the underlying 'broken VSE' issue, and isn't guaranteed to work, anyway.

Re: Update Dat file fails with error: Generic script error

Is the MS Windows system TEMP variable missing or incorrect in your registry?

Open Regedit and look for the TEMP and TMP key in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Current Control Set\Control\Session Manager\Environment\

If the TEMP and TMP keys exist, are they correctly set to use the value %SystemRoot%\TEMP ?

If they don't exist, create the keys as type REG_EXPAND_SZ and set them to use the path %SystemRoot%\TEMP

Stop and restart your McAfee agent service and this should hopefully sort you out.

Re: Update Dat file fails with error: Generic script error

Hi,

Do you have permissions under C:\ProgramData\McAfee\Common Framework\Current?

If yes, please delete the DAT folder and it will be recreate once you update the antivirus again (you may need to stop McAfee Framework to do this)

Best regards,

José María
