Unblocking my outgoing email

I use a service called MSGTAG to inform me when an email I send is opened by the recipient. As a
teacher this program has become indispensible to me in my communication with students. It works in
the following way.

"MSGTAG adds a small invisible tag to an outgoing email message. When the recipient opens the email, the tag notifies the MSGTAG server, which in turn notifies the sender that the message has been received. "

Up until I upgraded my previous McAfee Enterprise program to VirusScan Enterprise + Antispyware Enterprise 8.7.0i MSGTAG worked without a problem. Now however, McAfee interupts all outgoing mail and my mail server, SMTP.FUSE.NET gives me the following error message: "Error talking to SMTP server[554 MSTGTAG unable to connect to SMTP server]"

How do I know that McAfee is the blocking agent? If I disable McAfee's On Access Scan the message passes through and MSGTAG provides the usual notification . Thus, there must be a way to tell McAfee to allow MSGTAG to tag and pass my outgoing email in the normal fashion. Unfortunately, I do not know how/where to look within McAfee's VirusScan Console to make the needed change. I checked the log and found that McAfee is blocking MSGTAGstatus.exe from accessing port 25 which my outgoing email server (SMTP.fuse.net) uses. The log reads as follows:

10/10/2009 5:00:59 PM Blocked by port blocking rule D:\MSGTAG Status\MSGTAGStatus.exe Anti-virus Standard Protection:Prevent mass mailing worms from sending mail 216.68.8.162:25

How do I tell McAfee to allow MSGTAGstatus to gain entry to port 25? I trust that one of the forum experts will be able to assist me...Thanks greenbdb

RE: Unblocking my outgoing email

VSE blocks port 25 (SMTP) by default. Just go to Access protection policies, A-V standard protection and untick "Prevent mass mailing worms ...".

FYI: if your VSE is being updated and managed centrally from ePO then this setting will be overwritten on the next update cycle ...

Thanks petr.bohac,
I simply added MSGTAGstatus.exe to the list of exclusions and it worked. I did not need to uncheck the block column in AVSP. Now we shall see if the University's ePO removes it. If so, I will request that they add the address for MSGTAG........Many thanks for your help......Greenbdb

Interesting use of WebBugs

Correct me if I am wrong, but it sounds like MsgTagStatus.exe is adding a tag (some might say, a 'WebBug') to the email message. (This would be an Outgoing Mail Proxy.) When the email is opened by the recipient (by whatever means) the tag communicates back to MsgTag server which in turn identifies the source sender.

Now, the question is, does this Tag reply using Port 25. If so, your students may also get blocked by their copy of VSE unless it also has the exclusion you set. (Most WebBugs use Port 80 to avoid this issue since that port must remain open for normal web browsing.)

I hope this has been helpful.

Unblocking my outgoing email (Cont'd)

Thanks Ron,

I really do not know what port MSGTAG uses (it is not 25), but I have determined that when my students open my email I am notified. The notification is pinned to the message that appears on an MSGTAG options page that lists every email that I send through Eudora. Again thanks for your help......Greenbdb

Client reply must be using port 80

Thanks for the info! I'm guessing that the client MsgTag must be replying using port 80. It's how I would do it for the least interference from routers and firewalls.
