VirusScan will only detect viruses, unwanted programs, or threads coming together with the email, it does not detect spam.
To stop spam from coming into your organization, you will need to get any of our multiple antispam solutions, Groupshield, Email and web Security appliances, McAfee Secure Messaging Service, etc...

Then you should be able to block spam efficiently, please verify what is the score you set for the spam to be detected, normally a usual score threshold is 5, additionally add the spam score to all email and check what is the score that Groupshield is giving to those spam (You can check this on the Internet header of the email), look if those emails have been scanned by Groupshield, if they have been scanned they will contain X-NAI headers on the Internet header. After reviewing all of that and submitting the samples if necessary if the problem is not solved, please do not hesitate to open a case with support. No spam message should pass a McAfee spam filter and if that happens we will do all what is in our hands to block it and make sure that that type of spam never crosses the filter again, also we will analyze why it happened(Spammers use new techniques every day) and prevent it from happening in the future.
