Do both these methods exclude the directory on any drive? I have read *:\folder\ is valid but haven't found anything for *\folder\

You may need to add an additional wild card - example
Exclude the Temp folder in any location, on any drive.
In this example the following directories would be excluded:
- c:\documents and settings\Administrator\Local Settings\temp
