Disabling 'Get newer detection engine and dats if available'

Hi,

I would like to know the implications of disabling the 'Get newer detection engine and dats if available' within the autoupdate task properties of Enterprise 8.7.

At present I have 'get newer detection definition files if available' and 'Get newer detection engine and dats if available'  selected on my clients in an unmanaged enviroment.

I understand that I cannot un-select ' get newer definition files' as this will stop downloading the gem files. However if I unselect 'Get newer detection engine and dats if available'  apart from my client not downloading new engines (which is not an issue) can my client still download gem files but not the monthly superdat?

I haven't found a KB article to suffciently explain this, I will be grateful if someone could advise me regarding this option.

thanks.

Re: Disabling 'Get newer detection engine and dats if available'

Pedrocks,

As per my findings, this should not deter your clients from getting the .gem updates.

However, I am curious, why would you NOT want the new scan engine ? When something new is coming up, its definitely for better ( Except VISTA ) and it is bound to have better impact on the resources. Also, any given scan engine undergoes a decent beta life before it hits the stands real time.

So if I were you, I would just let the update happen.

Thank you

Sameer

See McAfee KnowledgeBase article KB52426 for an explanation on why Engine updates are necessary from time to time.
