I have some newly deployed Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 servers running VSE 8.7i Patch2 with HotFix HF517265.
These are the only 4 of 30 Citrix Servers that have 8.7i installed.
All of the other servers have 8.5i installed.
The servers reboot every morning.
The users start hitting them heavy (< 40 sessions) at 8:00AM
By 9 or 10 I notice that I cannot pull up task manager. I get the little green tray icon for Taskmgr.exe but the gui won't launch.
I can launch Terminal Services Manager but no sessions are displayed.
I can run tasklist from a command prompt and I don't see anything unusual.
The system seems responsive other thatn that but when a user logs into the Citrix Server through our Secure Gateway it will hang indefinately on the "Running Logon Scripts"
I don't have any of these issues on the servers running VSE 8.5i
The exclusions are the same.
I exclude the %windir%\system32\spool dir and all sub dir.
I exclude all of the Windows Update folders per microsoft.
If I remove VSE 8.7 and install 8.5 the issue goes away.
That is obviously not a long term solution.
I hope someone may have some idea what's going on here.
Thanks,
David
Also, if i look at the Citrix Access Management console "Users" for those servers there are always at least 4 DOWN sessions that show a session ID and a DOWN state but nothing else.
Also. I can reset them or log off and they appear to go away until the view is refreshed then they return.

Yes. I even excluded the entire C drive and sub-folders as a test. Thanks
Try this Microsoft hotfix, It resolves serveral issues with TermSrv.dll including one related to down sessions.

Thanks Pat,
I'll give it a test and report back my results.
Best,
David
The hotfix seemed like it was working but I am getting DOWN sessions that cannot be killed and Task Manager will not display. So I have to remove VSE 8.7
Doh.
Thanks anyway
Were you able to resolve this issue? I am having the exact same problem.
Negative.
I am just using 8.5i since I can't afford to use the prod servers as a test bed.
If I ever do get it working I will post back.
It's going to have to be a patch or something from McAfee since I have tried everything I can think of on the server.

I recently tried to upgrade my Citrix 4.5 farm from VSE 8.5 to 8.7 and saw the exact same problems described here. I can also add one new piece of information: some of my Citrix servers are dedicated to a single application which is published Anonymously. Those servers don't experience any of these problems, and I have not had to roll them back to 8.5. Clearly the nature of the user logon process plays a part in the expression of these errors.
