Hi there, perhaps I'm missing someting or have inadvertently done some thing wrong but since recently joing the 'Community' I've noted a massive increase in 'Junk Mail' coming into my in-box with origins which seem to be coming via this site.I spent nearly an hour online with an operator from McAfee Tech Support and in the end I was told I would have to live with it as these e-mails are outo-generated thereis nothing that can be done about it. My concern is that the majority of the e-mails that come through and today I've had 29 so far have the names of the Sender like : Peacekeeper' , 'ex-brit,
I have a screen shot of todays page but I'd rather not post it here. If any of the Mods would like to see it PM me and we can sort something out.
What concerns me is that somehow this site seems to have a security problem if this sort of thing is going on.
Is it just me or has anyone else experienced similar jumk mail??
Did this issue just start today? I have not seen anything on my end nor have I had any reports of anyone other than yourself experiencing this.
Hopefully someone will chime in with a better answer for you.
Hi there Tom
No Its been happening reall ever since I joined the community a few weeks ago. I noticed first of all I was getting e-mails sent which dealt with questions raised on the site. on an average about 6 or so during the day. As they were of no interest I'd just delete them. Then about 3 weeks ago we were away for the weekend and when I got back I had somewhere in the region of at least 150 e-mails from various places. In amongst them I noticed some that I could identify as coming from this site but the content was more about chat lines etc. So I started to mark them all as junk. About a week ago we had been out foir the day and when I downloaded my e-mails the PC went crazy as all of these 'odd' emails went straight in to the junk mail box. To me the senders I'didnt know. Now I've noticed the senders have the names of Mods on this forum as I said 'Peacekeeper, ex-brit. I've just counted 25 supposedly sent from PeaceKeeper.. Ok its not doing me any harm because they are being intercepted and put into the junk file. But it is of concern that they are being sent out under the guise of MOds names.
A Moderatioin block has been set up so although spammers can still join they are largely prevented from posting...then we ban them for good measure. We can spot the typical spammer profile usually and do a pre-emptive strike.
The reason the OP was receiving my name and other Mods names as senders is that the board sends notifications that way, so if we happen to be the last poster then it would appear to be from us. If you check the actual address it's coming from though you will find that it's a noreply@mcafee-type address.
Edit: Moved this to Community Interface Help as a more appropriate spot.Message was edited by: Ex_Brit on 17/06/14 1:33:24 EDT PM
As Tony (Peacekeeper), Peter F (Hayton) and I handle most of the spam anyway it would explain it I think. ;-)
If the OP has cancelled all notifications, I hope he comes here to see the answers.
They weren't junk mail, they were legit notifications. If one subscribes to an entire section, in this case Business, then everything will be notified, good or bad.

Dear Ex-Brit, thanks for the explanation, I take your point but as far as I was concerned once I've seen the title relating to Love?Marriage Specialist I dont expect it relate to this site. So as far as I'm converned I treat it as junk especially when you get 20+ being downloaded at the same time.. The fact that it had Mods names against them meant nothing to me. Its a pity the poor guy on the Technicasl Help Desk didn't understand that they were as you say 'Legit notifications@ cos he thought they were junk as well, and fair play to him tried his hardesrt to find some way of blocking them.
Still I know now what to look for and it will be interesting to see if any more slip through the net.

I find it best not to subscribe to an entire section but rather just to individual threads or maybe sub-sections that interest me, and of course the ones I've replied to will automatically subscribe me anyway unless I unsubscribe.
