1 where did you get your Mcafee from an ISP of a store/from mcafee direct?
Some partners are running older 11.0 versions that are not win 8 compatible.

How did you tried installing your MAV? Did you do it by inserting the CD or you tried the online option?
If you havent, please register your CD-Key by following the instructions on the Quick Install Guide (white sheet) hwere it indicates you to access mcafee.com/mav/retailcd to redeem your cd-key.
By doing so, and after login-in to your mcafee account, please select your correspondant country to do the download.
Downloading the most updated version (release) of the product you shouldn´t have a problem installing it on a W8 system.
If issue continues, please contact our free tech support and they should provide you with futher instructions to resolve your issue.

I had tried doing so by inserting the CD, when i was greeted with the error that i posted earlier.
I tried to register the key, after reading your reply. But that is not working either. Attaching the error that had popped up, for your reference.
Few details about the CD pack:
month & year : aug-2012
manufacturer name and address: lenovo (singapore)Pte. Ltd.
now please tell me what did you mean by 'correspondant country'? I am asking because, i entered India at first. Then came the error.
So i entered Singapore later (courtesy cd cover) and then i also tried entering China (courtesy laptop cpver box) Still no luck
I must add here that there is a small logo on the cd cover, saying "compatible with windows 7"
I had not seen it earlier, guess the retailer too missed it 😕
Is it why the key is not being accepted?

I don't think this has anything to do with Windows 8 or Windows 7 compatibility per se, but more to do with your language settings on your machine.
You are in India I believe?
What language and keyboard input method are you using?
These may help and with the first one you can check what your current settings are:

Yes, I am from India.
By following your link, i found out that the primary language (and the only language in this case) is English (India)
I had enetered the same along with the key in the link that Alex had posted.
Tried Singapore (English) later as the CD is manufactured there
and then China as well, as my laptop is apparently made there.
none of the combinations worked
what would you suggest?
I'm no Windows 8 expert but I logged into my Windows 8 Pro system to see if I got any inspiration.
You could try the following, which can be reversed if it doesn't work.
On that language screen you can see above the actual language there is an 'Add a language' button.
Either follow the second link I posted previously or simply click it and then click English, then choose English (Singapore)
(I'm assuming the CD is for English Singaporeans and not Malay-speaking ones).
Let Windows install that language pack and then switch to it. Reboot and retry the CD.
If it works it may even still work if you switch back to using English (India).

Another thing to try, is to open the CD to view contents rather then simply letting it run, and locate the setup.exe, right-click it and go to Properties.
Click the Compatibility tab
Click the option to do it for all users.
Then select run in compatibility with either Vista SP2 or Windows 7, Apply and OK.
Then try the installation again.
