problems with browser after installing IS last night

I'm having a number of problems running the three-user Internet Security Suite I upgraded to last night.

First, I had the "red x's" problem while installing it last night (which was finally resolved after several tries and a chat session with support... I mention it only in case it's relevant to the current problem).

After installation, I noticed I no longer saw ads on web pages. For most people this is a good thing, but I'm a web designer and need to be able to see them and make sure they're working properly. I also couldn't log on to Google Adsense.

Javascript and Flash weren't working, and .pdf files won't load.

I assumed this was part of the parental controls, so I tried accessing the Security Center to see if I needed to modify my preferences, but the box was blank. I thought it might be because I was running a limited Windows user account and not admin, so I logged on as administrator and tried to give my non-admin account more privileges under the parental controls. Logged back on to my non-admin account and there was no change, so I switched back to admin and turned off the parental controls and firewall completely. Still no change.

I went through the browser Add-Ons menu and disabled anything labeled McAfee, closed all Windows and restarted, but no change; still no Javascript, Flash, etc.

Tried to install the latest version of Flash but could not even access the download as Javascript was not working.

I even had trouble registering for this support forum as the Image Verification wouldn't load.

Help!

RE: problems with browser after installing IS last night

I have now gone through three chat sessions, run some kind of Internet Explorer repair program, downloaded and installed Windows Script, uninstalled and reinstalled McAfee all to no avail. I can barely use my browser because so many sites are heavily dependent on Javascript or Flash these days (including the McAfee site, the login doesn't work). Can anyone solve my problem?

RE: problems with browser after installing IS last night

Please include the following information:
What is your operating system, service pack and are you up to date with Microsoft update? There are two ways of checking this. Go to Start/Run and type in winver then click the Enter key. Or, right-click My Computer in the Start Menu or on your desktop (or Computer in Vista) and select Properties.
Post what it says.
Also post what version of Internet Explorer you are using please, found under Help/About.

What McAfee products do you have? If your taskbar icon is like this: - right-click it and go to each application "About" and post the details.
If it is like this: - double-click to open SecurityCenter and then click "View Details" or "About" at the lower right of the new window. Post the details from each module.

Have you checked for spyware? Use the free versions of these two tools:
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Let them clean everything they find.

Meanwhile another question to finish...have you been using registry cleaners at all? If so, stop now.

This chat, do you mean McAfee Technical Support Chat?

Yes, last night they directed me to reset Internet Explorer, but that didn't work either.

RE: problems with browser after installing IS last night

Once all this is cleared up you should go to IE8 and SP3.

Run the free versions of these two tools and let them clean everything they find.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

If that doesn't find anything I'll have to ask for more help because, barring any malware infections, it sounds like Windows is corrupted, not sure how or why, but a format and reinstall may be in order.

RE: problems with browser after installing IS last night

Running the antispyware programs now. I also tried upgrading to IE8 but the installation failed. The failed installation left a shortcut on my desktop to http://support.microsoft.com/gp/ie8_browserDetect which was supposed to tell me why the installation failed, but the page was empty and trying to navigate through the list of countries to get to support didn't work (I'm guessing it involved Javascript).

Will update again after running the tools...

Strange that IE8 install would fail, anyway, good luck.

SuperAntiSpyware did find and delete a Trojan, but IE8 still wouldn't install. Could you link me to the IE repair tool so I can try it again? And whatever that repair tool was for the empty McAfee box? I changed my limited user account to an administrator account and want to try running them again just in case.

RE: problems with browser after installing IS last night

That's more a question for a Windows specialising group, but what I do recommend is to run Hijackthis and post its log along with the problems you've been having on one of the following forums for expert guidance.

DOWNLOAD HIJACKTHIS

Do not post the log here, we can't help!

Post the logs at a specialist Forum:
