mfevtps.exe and mcshield.exe eating up CPU during Startup

I have recently been trying to speed up my computers startup time.  In monitoring my CPU usage during startup I found that the McAfee processes mfevtps.exe (McAfee Process Validation Service) and mcshield.exe (McAfee Process Validation Service) use a large portion of my CPU.  Specifically, mfevtps.exe uses 30-40% for the first 1-2 minutes after the desktop loads, and mcshield.exe uses ~30% from the 2 minute mark to the 3 minute mark.  Is this slowdown inevitable if I wish to keep my computer safe? Or can I modify these programs in some way so as to speed up my startup process? Thanks
