I am on Windows 7 Ultimate (fresh format and install this past week). Thunderbird 24.0.1 and McAfee Security Center v 12.8 are not working together.
It takes 30 seconds to a minute to load an e-mail and is painfully slow. I have researched answers and see that the issue were present with Thunderbird 17 but nothing recent has been published and nothing with v24.0.1. I have set up new inbox, compacted and archived every folder and only have about 10 e-mails in my inbox so things should be very quick.
McAfee Security Center v.12.8 is using the following:
Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware v.16.8
Personal Firewall v.13.8
Site Advisor v.3.6
Parental Controls v.14.8
Quickclean and Shredder v.13.8
Vulnerability Scanner v.2.8
When I go into Real time scanning and uncheck the e-mail attachments options everything goes back to normal and works fine again.
This option works however I am concerned that incoming e-mails will no longer be scanned, which is why we have anti-virus to begin with.
I have been using Thunderbird and McAfee together for over 5 years with no issues until now.
Any help would be appreciatedMessage was edited by: wazza on 10/16/13 3:41:52 PM CDT
I've got exactly the same problem. I've also got Thunderbird 24.0.1 and McAfee Security Center v. 12.8 on Windows 7.
After a re-start today, Thunderbird started to lock-up at times and be extremely slow, making it impossible to work.
The un-checking of the e-mail attachment options did the trick - however, I'm also concerned about no scans of of incoming email attachments now will take place, which feels rather un-safe.
So, just as wazza above, I'd be grateful for any help.
I had the same problem after Thunderbird updated to v 24. It took me a while to find this site for a solution, but it seems to be working fine. Mozilla claims it is unnecessary to have McAfee scan the e-mails,and I have another layer of protection from the server, I believe. Just blocking the antivirus in the Thunderbird program didn't help.Message was edited by: drdibble56 on 10/18/13 5:45:01 PM CDT
The issue will be fixed seems to happen most upgrades to TB . Happened 2 times before and Mcafee fixed it. You still have the real time scanner checking all files that are attached when you try to open them.
I am in the same boat even with the newer version 12.9 beta.
Of course having this happen at the start of a weekend slows fixing it down but if Selvan a mcafee tech posting in another thread can get some logs this should be easy to be fixed.

I am on Windows v8.1, with Thunderbird 24.0.1 and security centre 12.8 (Virus checker 16.8)
It is not just mail with attachements any item in the inbox takes agaes to open with real time scanning turned on ... opens instantly when it is turned off
Yes but does disabling scanning of email attachments in rge real time scanning settings fix it as well as full disabling of RTS?
IT definately does for me and not as severe a fix as turning off all scanning.
Yes disabling scanning of email attachments in real time scanning settings does remove the McAfee performance issue - but it is bad practice to have this turned off - attachmeneyts should be checked .
