I have Win 7 Ultimate and I recently had a a rootkit virus that kept booting the computer constantly. The best solution I found online in a forum was to delete any antivirus software installed, install a specialized antivirus detector and then use Puppy Linux to take care of the rest.
Back to the issue at hand. When I now try to install SC 10 from my accouint at McAfee, the application tells me that the installation was incomplete and none of the services are installed. I tried running the Virtual Technician and it doesn;t recognize anything. Tried uninstalling SC but when I do so from Control Panel it tells me to select which service but uinstall but obviously there wont be anything there.
Thanks in advance.
Since you have already tried to install McAfee and are having issues with it, try to uninstall via Add/Remove programs and reboot. Then run the MCPR removal tool found at the top of this page under Useful Links which will remove any traces of McAfee that may remain and reboot again.
See this link for additional help in installing the software and be sure to use the Preinstall tool which is included in this link http://service.mcafee.com/faqdocument.aspx?id=TS100119
Let us know if this works for you
Tyvm for the quick reply, k3tg.
I tried ur method step by step including the extra installation tips. MCPR did a good job at clearing all McAfee software but after downloading the installation file and the installation begins, the bar only moves about half an inch and the changes to "Incomplete Installation".
I can't manually remove it through Control Panel but MCPR is able to completely delete it for me.
I am not familiar with Windows 7 as I have XP on my computer. Could you tell us whether you are trying to install 32 bit or 64 bit software?
I believe Ex Brit and Peacekeeper use Windows 7 so they may chime in and provide some more info to help you.
The rootkit is gone and the computer doesn;t have any infections. What is the preinstall file? Is it that small "DMSetup" file you get from the My Account?
The preinstall file was suggested by Tom and aa FAQ article linked to. It suggests things to do before installing 1 of which is run
I tried the preinstall file n it did what it was supposed to do. The operation was successful but I started to install SC, it doenloaded the installation files as usual n when it started to install the program, the installation paused at around 15-20% n crashed my PC. No commands were working n the computer wasn't thinking so I had to manually boot it.
I"m not sure if I should keep on trying to install this because it might cause some harmful damage to my system.
