Real-Time Scanner Query

After installing the an update, Security Center took longer than normal to start up the real time scanner; it hang at "Starting up" for a minute or so, then claimed it was "Off" for a few seconds, but then corrected itself. It didn't display a "Your computer is at risk" message and Virtual Technician claims everything is ok. I ran into a similar problem a few months ago, only the scanner wouldn't start up at all. Oddly, all it took was a check for updates, then an installation, to fix it last time. Is this just a "glitch" or something more serious?
