Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

I did as you suggested and uninstalled/reinstalled McAfee, and I now have the 10.5.194 version.  Since then I've shut down the computer twice and the first time got no error, but the second time the error came back.  Very, very annoying.  So I will have to go back to terminating the McSvHost prior to shutdown until McAfee completes the debugging process --which is taking forever and a day.

Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

Hi Folks,

As an ex-mainframe bod and this is PC software, please correct me if I am wrong.

Firstly I think any advice or help anyone brings here is to be appreciated by all as I certainly do.

With respect I don't see the point of uninstalling McAfee and then installing AVG free.

I have concerns that a person may uninstall McAfee Internet Security, install AVG free, and continue doing banking on their PC without any further protection.

AVG free lacks important components to protect the identity of the user etc.

With respect to all I think people are taking the error message out of context.  It doesn't damage your PC, it is purely a nuisance only.

I have 2GB Ram and while I haven't had the message for some time, occasionally I was getting it.

If it required an increase in RAM to solve the problem then increasing the size of the hard drive would have no effect at all.

The size of the hard drive has no bearing on the size of RAM.  They are different components.

I have SecurityCenter version 10.0.580 and I manually check for updates every day as well as auto updates.

I'm not concerned it isn't 10.5, no doubt it will progress at the appropriate time.

Regards to all

Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

Saab900,

Errors do indeed cause damage! Most hard drive fragmentation is caused by an error. And, many errors do not generate alerts.

This error is related to a "memory write" function. Specifically, the McAfee software can not complete it's memory write at shut down; so, when the computer is restarted McAfee isn't aware of the changes which generated that memory write.

The error is usually generated [on my network] at shut down on those days when either a complete scan or a manual update has been run.

Further, in the time this error has gone uncorrected, I've noticed addtionally "nuisances" ocurring with McAfee's operation: failure to load updates when updates are available {website has updates listed but my software will declare "no update available" or "your services are up to date"}; failure to load applications {most notable the "Real Time Scanning"} at start-up; failure to scan all files and folders on system [even though the scan settings are appropriately saved] during a full scan; failure to run scan of DOS and registry during boot; failure to block malware and suspicious files; and, failure to maintain quarantine of infected files.

I have no doubt all of these problems are associated with the malicious code which caused the loss of so many systems several months ago. I have no doubt McAfee failed to thoroughly examine their software for additional effects of the code before they issued an update to remove the malevolent script.

Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

Hi Wetmoref2,

Just to pass on some information, this issue is in no way related to the 5958 DAT issue which happened at the end of April. McSvcHost and Svchost are totally unrelated files, made by 2 different companies.

In all my discussions with our dev and senior techs, the cause of the issue is that this service doesn't shut down in the time Windows allocates for it. There are actually more than one cause of this, which is why various updates have resolved the issue for some, but not everyone, and why a 100% cure-all hasn't been released yet. Some people have been resolved though, so some progress has been made. We've still got work to do though, and it is being worked on at high priority.

When we say no data is lost, what we mean is that it isn't a critical stop or a blue screen. It doesn't happen in the middle of an application, causing you to lose work. Hard drive fragmentation would have to be extreme to cause data loss, mostly you're just going to see some performance slow down. Regardless, I have not had any reports of that from customers.

The list of items you gave sound like they need to be looked into. Have you contacted support for any of them yet? If so, did they give you an SR number? I'd like to have a tech look over them, see if we can't get to the root of the issue and get you sorted. Regarding the updates being available but not downloading, I wouldn't know for sure without looking at what update you were trying to download, but we don't make updates available to the whole customer base at one time. We roll patches and updates (and new versions) out in groups for bandwidth purposes. We've got something around 40 million people downloading, so it has to go in chunks.

Please do let me know if you have an SR number and I'll take a look.

Thanks!

Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

Re DAT update are you looking at the enterprise pages to see what DAT is current. These do show up slightly earlier than the dat arrives and as Somer says they are grouped not just opened worldwide to download.

I did say back 2 mths when I was testing the beta 10.5 that this issue was marked as fixed in the fix list they gave me. Some users here tried the beta and reported nothing fixed so I did not push the point. What is strange is since my test box updated to 10.5 zero messages but then I am only having 3 in 45 shutdowns now with the issue so really cannot say it helped.

It does help update scheduling and scanning though.

Re: McSvHost.exe causes error on Shutdown

Thank you for your response wetmoref2 but please do not mis-quote me.

You refer to errorS generally and of course errorS can cause damage to a computer including the hard disc. However I am not talking abut errorS generally as you are leading others to believe but a specific problem at closedown which the feedbacks I've seen suggest causes a problem of a message displaying prior to closing.  I agree one would expect a solution to have been found long before now but the fact is it wasn't and nothing any user says is going to alter that.  Clearly you are having a great deal of problems with your systems and I appreciate it can be extremely frustrating and I am sorry to hear of your problems.  The complaints I've seen in my email relate to a message coming up at closedown only - nothing about damage.
