This has become a recent problem everytime I turn my computer back on. After Win XP boots up, nothing I click on will open and after about 5-8 minutes, the main McAfee security center menu pops up along with any other applications I attempted to open. Right after the McAfee window pops up, it turns off and then back on again. This has been an issue for almost the past month. I've also run into issues with McAfee turning off and on every so often for the past few months but this lock up of applications at the start up has been more recent. Is anyone else experiencing this problem?
Also about my OS. I'm running Windows XP SP3.
You may want to try running the McAfee Virtual Technician found at the top of this page under Useful Links under Technical Support. MVT will scan your computer for any McAfee related issues and if it finds any it will attempt to fix them. If for some reason it cannot fix something it will prompt you to contact Technical Support Chat which is free and they are available 24/7.
I see you are running SP3. Are you up to date with all windows updates? Did you ever have any previous security software installed before? How do you connect to the internet? DSL, dial up, cable? How much available ram in computer?
-Tried the Virtual Technician but it could not find anything. (Will probably try again.)
-I've made sure Windows runs update scans everyday.
-I believe Norten AntiVirus was on this computer originally but after my subscription with them ran out. I uninstalled the software. I've also had Spybot and Ad-Aware on my computer before.
-I connect via wifi to a DSL connection.
-I have 1 gig of RAM.
Did you uninstall norton with its removal tool if no remove mcafee via add/remove program in the control panel and download and run the MCPR removal tool for mcafee.
Reboot and run the norton removal tool for the version you had installed. If either spybot or adware were paid versions ie loaded real time scanners they need uninstalling in fact best to remove them at this time anyway. Reboot
Reinstall Mcafee and see it all stable now.
How old is the hard disk?
I removed Norten properly through its own uninstallation process. I used the free versions of anti-spyware programs like Spybot and Ad-Aware. There no longer on my hard-drive though since I recently removed them. The hard drive itself is around 5 years old.
Hard drives can go at any time though my daughter's is 8 years. That is why I suggested the chkdskMessage was edited by: Peacekeeper on 12/08/10 6:50:27 AM
The lock up has become less of an issue it seems but McAfee still randomly shuts off and on. Should I uninstall and reinstall the software?
I tried the chdsk but nothing out of the ordinary came up.Message was edited by: Gabe07 on 8/11/10 11:09:28 AM CDT
Yes there might be a corrupted file. make sure you follow the uninstall path mentioned here and ensure you can get to your account online before to start.
