Re: RE: McAfee Security Scan installed on my computer

THANK YOU!

An hour ago I updated Adobe Flash Player, and McAfee just now appeared on my desktop.

When I have updated Flash in the past I have seen the option to add McAfee to the update.  Either I didn't see the box or it wasn't there this time to de-select the McAfee add-on.

Thank you for solving this conundrum.  GOOD JOB!

McAfee Security Scan installed on my computer

Several scans on my PC have shown a Trojan that exploits Java.  Java just issued update 6.24 and it comes with a McAffee Security Scan.  If you did not review the contents of the update, that could be how it got on your PC.  I'd love to know how to get rid of this Trojan, and if the McAffee scan will remove it.

Peter and other McAffee gurus, any info about this Trojan?

Thanks

Re: McAfee Security Scan installed on my computer

McAfee Security Scan was optional and can be removed easily via Control Panel/Programs/Uninstall a Program (Vista/Windows 7) or Add or Remove Programs (XP).

When this thread was started over a year ago we didn't know what it was as it had only just been dreamed up by the developers.

It isn't a trojan and simply checks your system for safety problems.

McAfee Security Scan installed on my computer

Peter, thank you for clarifying that the scan was easily removed from the java update install and by using add/remove programs.

I didn't mean to imply that the McAffee scan was a Trojan.  This Trojan appeared about October 2010 and attached itself to Java. They suggested clearing the cache which I did but another scan I ran after the update and clearing the cache showed the same trojan still there.

Does the McAffee scan also do repairs if malware is found?

Thanks very much.

If it detects a trojan then it should be quarantined.  You can then delete it by opening SecurityCenter

Click Navigation (top right)

Click Quarantined and Trusted Items

It should be in one of the three areas there and can be deleted (or restored if it's a false finding - but that would then involve other steps)

Re: McAfee Security Scan installed on my computer

McAfee Security Scan installed on my computer too. It happened when I installed Adobe Reader. I unchecked the box which asked me to install McAfee but it still did. I found SSScheduler.exe in my task manager and researched to find out what it was. I know that it happened during the Adobe Reader install because I searched my computer for the date and time that McAfee was installed and found that it was at the same time that Adobe Reader was installed. Shame on McAfee and Adobe for forcing this on us.

Re: McAfee Security Scan installed on my computer

It's Adobe's installer that's at fault, the same thing happened to me the other day.   Luckily it's easy enough to remove, as previously stated.

Re: McAfee Security Scan installed on my computer

I'd like to know if McAfee is going to be sending me some money to help answer all the calls from confused employees when these bogus "security scans" start popping up on our company systems and I have to send someone down to remove this crap.  Perhaps a few class action lawsuites might make it a bit easier for them to see how installing unwanted so called "security" products on a corporate network can PISS OFF the IT department that has little to no time already to handle the real problems.

Re: McAfee Security Scan installed on my computer

yes, Ive had this installed on my machine too! I think it must be a trojan virus, ironic when this stuff is supossed to stop such things! Ive uninstalled it so hopefully that will be the end. I did have to jump thru an annoying number of hoops in order to reply to you here!

Re: McAfee Security Scan installed on my computer

As previously explained it is totally harmless and merely checks your security status and is easy to uninstall.

When downloading stuff from other makers, expecially Adobe, make sure there are no optional downloads already checked off to be included with the download.
